What Is Sound Reaction Time?

Sound reaction time, also called auditory reaction time, is the delay between the start of an audible stimulus and a voluntary response. In this test, the browser waits for a random interval, plays a short tone, and records how long it takes you to click or press Enter or Space. Early responses are rejected so anticipation does not enter the five valid measurements.

The score includes more than hearing speed. The operating system must send audio to the selected output, the speaker or headphones must reproduce it, and the browser must receive the click or key event. The result is therefore best used as a repeatable personal benchmark on one setup rather than as a laboratory measurement.

Sound vs. Visual Reaction Time

The Visual Reaction Time Test asks you to respond to a color change, while this page uses an audio tone. The tasks involve different sensory signals and different device pipelines. A monitor refreshes visual frames; an audio interface sends samples to speakers or headphones. Those hardware paths can add different amounts of delay before you can perceive the stimulus.

Take the test in a quiet environment and avoid turning the volume so high that the tone becomes uncomfortable. Five rounds reduce the effect of one distracted response, but they do not remove hardware latency or practice effects.
